The tillage crisis fund relating to the 2016 harvest is still some way off. On Tuesday, the Oireachtas agriculture committee discussed the issue, and is writing to the Minister for an update. Cork Senator Tim Lombard, who attended a meeting with tillage farmers in Cork on Monday, said he hopes the fund will be sufficient to meet demand. Stories had circulated in Cork that the aid package could be as low as €1.2m; €4m is reckoned to be required. TAMS and the low-interest fund were also raised by farmers, with the feeling that the tillage sector is still the forgotten child of Irish farming.
