Mountmellick Macra will host a farm walk on Friday 6 May on the farm of the 2021 winner of the FBD Young Dairy Farmer of the Year.

Trevor Cobbe farms in Doolagh, Portarlington, Co Laois. Doolagh Farms has a herd of pedigree Holstein Friesian cows and there will be a full tour of the farm on the night.

Trevor will talk about his career in farming so far and will go through the farm’s current performance.

There will also be time for questions, chat and discussion.

Macra’s agricultural affairs committee chair Shane Fitzgerald will chair a panel discussion between previous young farmer of the year winners and the focus won’t just be on dairy for this part of the evening, with all Macra members and potential new members encouraged to attend.

The 2021 winners on the panel for discussion are:

  • Éanna Tiernan, Roscommon – drystock and biodiversity young farmer of the year.
  • Eoin Kennedy – land mobility award.
  • Shane Halpin – other enterprises award.
  • Sustainability

Remember, it’s important to take a break from the farm as well.

Social sustainability is extremely important and an event like this is great to meet other young farmers and share ideas, advice and questions.

Macra has been holding a number of walks in recent months, so keep an eye out for details.

If you attend this event, you might even go to a non-farming event with Macra the next time and take a real break from the farm, maybe even get a bit of exercise in at tag rugby or in the poc fada competition.

    Event details

The event begins at 6.30pm at Doolagh Farms and it’s free to attend. To find the farm, use Eircode R32 P4F8.
