There was a very large entry of animals for last Saturday’s sale at the showgrounds in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Some 179 bulls and heifers were catalogued for sale, which included Limousin, Charolais, Simmental and Belgian Blues.

Overall trade could be described as tough, with a lot of animals failing to meet their reserves and returning home again.

Dangerous driving conditions on the morning of the sale probably had an effect on the sale, with a small crowd in attendance.

Top-quality bulls were a good trade, but customers were scarce and plainer animals were harder to shift.

The overall Charolais male champion was Lot 81 by Crossmolina Euro and was sold for the top price of the sale at €5,500. This bull was owned by Terry Bradley, Westmeath.

The reserve champion Charolais, Galloway Mavrick, was from Michael and Paul Kiernan, Aughavas, Co Leitrim. This August 2016-born bull with a five-star terminal index was by CF52 and was knocked down at €4,000 to a Scottish purchaser.

Reserve champion Charolais from Michael and Paul Kiernan.

In the Charolais heifer section, Lot 135 from Michael Harrison, Donegal, a September 2016-born heifer by Pirate, was sold for the top price of €2,600.

The overall champion Limousin came from the Laheens herd of Cathal and Cormac Duignan, Eslin Bridge, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim. The bull, sired by On-Dit, was sold for €3,000.

A full report with more photos and full sale analysis with breed averages and clearance rates will be in this week’s edition of the Irish Farmers Journal.
