The Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland have launched a major review of hygiene controls in all UK meat-cutting plants.

The review will cover red meat, white meat and game cutting plants.

It will look at how the current legislation works and how official controls are carried out, including audits, inspections, sampling and surveillance.

It will examine the roles and responsibilities of food businesses, regulators and assurance bodies and assess how incidents are responded to.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced it would work with industry to implement CCTV across cutting plants and gather intelligence through audit data-sharing projects.

The move follows high-profile investigations into the 2 Sisters Food Group and catering supplier Russell Hume over alleged non-compliance with food hygiene regulations, including use-by dates.
