From Netflix to podcasts and books, there are plenty of options available to those looking to keep themselves busy during lockdown.

But, at this stage, some may want to be a little bit more creative in their home pursuits.

If there ever was a time to do something you’ve put on the long finger, this is it.

For art lovers, a new online art appreciation course could be an idea.

The National Gallery of Ireland is running an online art appreciation course with art historian Jessica Fahy.

Inspiration

The course is inspired by the Mondrian exhibition that was supposed to be running now at the National Gallery, which is currently closed under Level 5 restrictions.

Dutch artist Piet Mondrian was one of the most influential painters of the 20th century.

He is known for being one of the pioneers of 20th-century modern art.

In artistic direction, he moved from figurative painting to a more abstract style, until his work was simply geometric shapes.

The course is entitled Breaking the Mould and takes a journey from Impressionism through Cubism and on to abstract art.

It will look at Wassily Kandinsky’s spiritually inspired ‘colour music’ and Jackson Pollock’s macho action paintings.

Abstract works by Irish artists will also be discussed.

Of course, participants will study Mondrian himself too.

Details

Taking place on Zoom, Breaking the Mould starts on 14 January on runs every Thursday evening for eight weeks.

Sessions are also available to watch back and participants will be sent the course notes and slides.

It costs €140, with a 10% discount for students and over 65s.
