A dairy farmer in Wales has dumped 2,500l of milk that couldn’t be collected due to the severe weather conditions being experienced in the UK at the moment.

Simon Leverett from Llandeilo in Wales took to Twitter to highlight the problem on Monday 12 December.

The Welsh farmer is milking around 150 Jersey-cross cows and supplies First Milk Co-op.

He said that despite access to his farm being “good”, lorry drivers just can’t get to everybody at the moment.

Capacity

Another Welsh farmer is experiencing similar issues and has reached capacity in his bulk tank.

Michael Williams’ post on Twitter said that because of adverse weather conditions his milk couldn’t be collected.

“Due to adverse weather yesterday and our milk not being collected we had hoped to be collected today.

“The road is open, but no lorry is coming today. We are about to reach capacity of our bulk tank, 12,000l,” he said.

“Once we reach capacity the robots will stop milking so to avoid this and ensure our plant is hygienic I must now drain our tank to waste (on-farm manure lagoon) and get the tank washed to allow it to be refilled. Dumping edible, nutritious milk is soul-destroying,” he said.

Weather outlook

Over the last three days, temperatures in Wales dropped to as low as -8°C.

According to the Met Office this cold blast is set to continue into Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning as temperatures could drop as low as -8°C again.

Early figures for Monday night saw temperatures plummet in Scotland to -17.3°C overnight.
