An Post has published the locations of the 159 post offices set to close as part of a restructuring agreement with the Irish Postmasters' Union (IPU). In the named locations, the serving postmaster will retire and the business will be transferred to neighbouring offices.

To date, 16 post offices have already closed at the request of the retiring contractor. In a statement, An Post said its remaining 960 post offices would benefit from enhanced services and products boosting their viability.

Debbie Byrne, managing director of An Post retail, thanked the postmasters who have chosen to retire for their great service to An Post and local communities over many years. She also said that An Post was committed to ensuring the sustainability and viability of the post office network and would move now to offer more new and innovative services to customers through the reconfigured network.

“’We fully acknowledge that this process will be difficult for some customers and communities but the end result will be a strengthened, viable post office network serving the needs of our country for the future,’’ she concluded.

Trends

Based on data from the 2016 census, An Post has released the following patterns from the 159 offices:

  • All are within 15km of one or more post offices.
  • Almost 100 are in remote areas that are defined as having “no settlement”.
