Opened in 1957, Bandon Mart celebrated 60 years in business this week.

The mart has evolved since its inception, keeping pace with agricultural and social changes in its west Cork catchment area.

Mart chair Donal Kelly first attended the premises in 1958.

“There used to be cattle sold on a Monday, sheep on Tuesday and pigs on Wednesday and Saturday. These days there is just a weekly cattle sale on a Monday.”

Restrictions on movements is one of the bigger changes manager Tom McCarthy has seen over the years.

“Going back 20 years ago, cattle were moved four to six times; now that’s about two to two and a half movements. This has affected our business.

“We’ve gone through ups and downs over the last 60 years and we will continue adapting to provide a service and guaranteed payment for farmers.”
