Beef quotes are starting to rise again, with some processors having to lift quotes by 5-10/kg this week on the back of reduced supplies. Bullocks are now working off a base of €7.20-€7.30/kg, with heifers working off a base price of €7.30/kg this week.
There are a number of reports of factories offering a lot more, with €7.45/kg base price reported this week.
Cows have also steadied, with up to €7.50/kg now on the table for top-quality, heavy cows.
Agents are anxious for cattle and farmers holding out for price increases are winning at the moment. Last week’s kill saw a large drop in numbers, with almost 3,000 fewer cattle killed last week compared to the week before.
Last week’s kill was 13,541 head behind the same week in 2024, with the total kill to date back 104,704 head compared to the same period in 2024.
The mart trade is also very steady, with forward store bullocks and heifers being two of the highlights this week.
Large feeders are in buying mode for both the Christmas trade and early spring, with a lot of action around store rings this week.
The weanling trade has also held firm, despite the turmoil around exporters pulling out of marts this week.
In this week’s Martbids analysis, top-quality bull weanlings in the 300-400kg weight category came in at €6.50/kg, back 20c/kg on the previous week.
Some marts reported smaller numbers, but this could have been attributed to weather and lower numbers available rather than the exporter issue.
Ballyjamesduff Mart and Roscera Mart both postponed this week’s special weanling sales on the back of the exporter boycott. Exporters are expected to be back ringside from Monday 13 October.
