With a full clearance rate of the 155 calves on offer in Ballyjamesduff Mart at its weekly sale on Tuesday, there was strong demand for well-bred beef-cross calves and they had no bother in crossing the €500 threshold, selling up to €910.
With numbers similar to last week, the bulk of calves on offer were beef-cross calves.
With a large entry of Hereford-cross calves, heavy calves met a strong demand, with €500 the general run for good-quality bulls and heifers.
Some strong calves did make over €600, while younger and lighter calves out of crossbred cows sold from €300 to €450.
A small number of Charolais-cross calves sold extremely well, with prices from €450 up to €730, with sharp demand for bull calves.
Demand for Limousin
There were a number of Limousin calves on offer, with good demand. Stronger calves sold in the €500 to €600 region, with some lighter calves on offer in the €280 to €370 bracket.
Angus-cross bull calves met a strong demand from farmers. Heavier calves sold from €500 up to €700, with lighter calves selling for the €350 to €475 mark.
Angus-cross heifer calves sold well, with heavier calves selling from €400 to €500 and lighter calves in the €350 price bracket.
On the Friesian calf front, there was strong demand, with light calves selling for €150 upwards and well-bred Friesian-type calves from €350 to €410.
There were good numbers of Belgian Blue-cross calves on offer. Good calves from Friesian cows sold in excess of €400, with good demand for heifer calves selling to a top of €910.
Belgian Blue calves from crossbred cows or Jerseys appearing on the board weren’t as sought after, with these types selling from €275 to €400.
Following the sale, mart manager John Tevlin said: “We're seeing mostly farmers buying, with exporters not able to give the prices.
"There is an absence of northern buyers due to bluetongue restrictions. It's alright while sales are smaller, but farmers' calve cows that bit later up this way and we anticipate numbers are expected to ramp up over the coming weeks. We’d like to get these back around the ring.”
