Elphin Mart held a special sale of 115 maiden heifers last Saturday.

Breeding sales are still going very strong around the country, with a renewed confidence in breeding stock.

The heifers in Saturday’s sale were all top-quality Belgian Blue and Limousin cattle assembled from a number of different breeders.

Top call of the sale went to a March 2024-born Belgian Blue heifer weighing 710kg and selling for a massive €11,000.

There were plenty of the specialist in-calf heifer producers in attendance looking for heifers for their 2026 sales.

There was also a strong export trade, with close to 50 heifers sold to customers north of the border. The clearance rate was 100%, with the average price coming in just under €6000 for the 115 heifers.

Commenting on the sale, Elphin Mart manager Ciaran Lynch said: “It was an unbelievable sale with serious demand for top-quality heifers.

“There was a lot of online bidding, with purchasers having viewed the heifers beforehand.

“People buying on the day were saying it’s very hard to come across those heifers now and I suppose that’s why the trade was so good on the day.”

Elphin Mart has a special entry of 28 in-calf heifers on Monday 24 November.
