Camera at the Mart: heavier cattle more keenly sought in Cavan

A seasonally small sale of 63 cattle passed through the ring at Cavan mart’s general cattle sale on Friday last.

Plainer or lighter type animals were a slightly sticky trade as is seen across the country over the last two weeks, while heavy and more forward types were still solid, particularly for continental-type bullocks and heifers.

Bullocks weighing 300kg to 400kg sold between €2.96/kg and €3.94/kg, while lots weighing 400kg to 500kg consisted of Angus and Herford types selling around the €3.15/kg mark.

Greater variability in price and quality was seen in the 500kg to 600kg weight bracket, with continental types selling up to €4.10/kg, while dairy-beef types traded between €3.16/kg and €3.74/kg.

Heavy bullocks also saw variability, with €3.69/kg to €3.81/kg being achieved for continentals, with dairy-beef bullocks selling between €3.33/kg and €3.55/kg.

Heifers were similar, with lighter types trading between €3.18 and €3.23/kg, while dairy-beef store and finished heifers sold between €3.15/kg and €3.66/kg.

Continental-type heifers with ample flesh or ability to take feeding traded to highs of €3.72/kg. Top lot was a 710kg in-calf heifer that sold for €4,050 (€5.70/kg).
