Last Thursday’s sale at Ballymena Mart saw strong prices recorded for over 300 beef cattle, with steers selling to £2.21kg for a top-quality 530kg Angus.

Heifers sold to £2.20/kg for a 520kg Limousin and 680kg Belgian Blue. Females over 36 months sold to £1.88/kg for a 610kg Charolais.

Beef steers sold mainly from £2.02/kg for a 650kg Limousin to £2.21/kg. Beef heifers sold mainly from £2.03/kg to £2.20/kg, with prices averaging at about £2.10/kg. Beef cows sold from £1.61/kg to £1.88/kg. Friesians sold from £1.17/kg upwards.

Friday’s sale saw 26 dairy cows and heifers sell to £1,460, with other prices from £900 to £1,300. Sucklers sold to £1,710, with breeding bulls selling to £1,600 for a Limousin. 168 weanlings sold from £2.30/kg to £2.70/kg. Heifers sold from £2.23/kg to £2.90/kg, with prices averaging from £2.30/kg to £2.50/kg for good-quality types.
