Last Thursday evening’s sale at Mountrath saw a smaller entry of stock meet strong demand.
Mart manager Glen Cooper said that although the trade was smaller last week, this could be attributed to a larger entry today (Thursday) for the special U grade sale, which will take place every second week from now on.
Glen said that demand for forward weanling bulls from feeders continues to be strong at the mart and so too are prices.
Good-quality weanling bulls from 450kg to 500kg sold mainly from €2.25/kg for average-quality types to over €2.40/kg for U grade bulls.
Light bulls were met with good export demand and sold mainly from €2.50/kg to €3.30/kg. Farmer buyers were also particularly active for light bulls.
Farmer demand underpinned the price of heifers on the day
The best quality in that weight range sold to a top price of €1,330 or €2.69/kg, which was paid for a top-quality 495kg heifer.
Other good-quality heifers around the same weight sold from €1,170 to €1,270. An entry of top-quality breeding heifers, which were four- and five-star on the replacement index, commanded strong demand and prices of €1,200 to €1,400 for the majority of heifers.
Commission rates are 1.6% to the seller and €10 to the buyer.
