Throughput in Roscrea mart is holding at a higher level later into the year. Manager Michael Harty says this is still reflecting the knock-on consequences of a difficult winter with some farmers delaying their normal sales date due to cattle performing poorly. This was evident in particular in some 2016-born dairy-cross animals with poor weight for age. This left a wide differential in prices paid within breed types.

Friesian bullocks in the 400kg to 480kg weight bracket sold from €1.60/kg to €1.70/kg on average with better-quality lots rising to €1.80/kg. Lighter Friesians sold from €1.70/kg to €1.90/kg with a 10c/kg difference either side of this range depending on quality. Hereford and Angus bullocks weighing 340kg to 440kg sold on average from €1.95/kg to €2.20/kg with prices again falling 10c/kg either side for extremes in quality and 2016 versus 2017-born animals.

Michael says there has been a very strong trade all year for continental cattle with supplies failing to satisfy demand. Good quality suckler-bred continental stores weighing 400kg to 480kg sold from €2.40/kg to €2.80 with heavier lots weighing up to 550kg selling from €2.40/kg to €2.65/kg.
