The board of Meat Industry Ireland (MII) has expressed its full support for Larry Murrin to stay on as chairman of Bord Bia as it said that meat factories remain steadfast in “ensuring that the dominance of Irish supplies is not compromised” at home or abroad.
MII said that its board has “consistently supported farmers” and that its opposition to the EU-Mercosur free trade deal was an example of where it achieved “some success” in doing so.
“This will continue to be the case; however, we wish to emphasise the importance of maintaining focus on issues that benefit the Irish meat industry, bringing benefits to farmer suppliers, rural communities, and the industry at large,” a statement from MII goes on.
“The board of MII has expressed its full support for Larry Murrin in his role as chair of Bord Bia.
“As an industry dedicated to exporting Irish meat products globally, MII operates within a supply chain that upholds strict standards and specifications.
“This approach enables the supply of diverse products across multiple categories and demands both scale and agility to meet customer needs, including the ability to respond to unexpected surges in demand.”
MII said that its members’ navigation of these supply chains creates “opportunities for Irish farm produce on the world stage”.
“Our efforts ensure that Irish meat features on the retail shelves of blue-chip customers, consistently returning the best value to our farmer producers.
“However, it is important to note that these customers also set their own trade conditions, sometimes necessitating internationally-sourced inputs.”
The meat factory lobby group likened its members sourcing of food ingredients from overseas to the Irish farm sector’s “importation of fertilisers and feed to maintain high standards in livestock production for both the meat and dairy sectors”.
“Maintaining a clear focus on customer requirements is essential to ongoing success - this principle is not new and applies across all business relationships and industrial sectors.”
