Mart price update: Trade steadies due to good weather
The number of stock passing through marts has started to plateau in recent days, with farmers reluctant to bring stock out to sell due to the good weather.
As a result prices are steady in most areas. The big question remains: will a break in the weather in the coming weeks see a flurry of stock to marts and what impact that may have on prices?
Forward continental bullocks from 500kg to 600kg continue to sell mainly from €1.90/kg to €2.15/kg. Better quality U grades are making from €2.15/kg to €2.30/kg. Demand for lesser quality types and Friesians continues to be very weak.
In areas of strong dairy influence, prices continue to be weak with lesser quality continentals making €1.70/kg to €1.90/kg. Lighter store bullocks from 400kg to 500kg continue to sell from €1.90/kg to €2.10/kg across the country with better quality types making from €2.30/kg to €2.40/kg.

The number of heavy heifers on offer remains low across the country. The main supply of heifers is from 400kg to 500kg. These types are selling mainly from €2.00/kg to €2.15/kg on average with U grade types making from €2.20/kg to €2.30/kg on average. Lesser quality types are making from €1.70/kg to €1.80/kg.
Special sales have boosted weanling numbers and demand continues to be strong from exporters and farmers. Good quality continental weanling bulls are seeing prices range mainly from prices of €2.15/kg to €2.30/kg for average quality stock is common. Where lesser quality types are on offer a more variable trade has been seen and prices of €2.00/kg to €2.15/kg are more common. The top third in terms of quality are making from €2.40/kg to €2.50/kg on average.
Weanling heifers from 300kg to 400kg are selling mainly from €2.10/kg to €2.30/kg in areas where good quality continentals are on offer. Better quality U grades continue to sell mainly from €2.50/kg to €2.70/kg.
