The main camera at the mart was at last Tuesday’s sheep sale at Carnaross Mart. The sale was the first sheep trade in 2017 and kicked off strongly. In terms of numbers, there were over 900 sheep on offer, which is small for the mart, but given that it was the first sale of the year, it was a reasonable entry.

Mart manager Pat Larmer said that prices on Tuesday were similar to where the trade finished before Christmas and there were plenty of farmers, butchers and factory agents active for types.

There was an entry of about 130 to 140 butchers’ hoggets on offer. Prices ranged mainly from €102 to €105/head for those over 50kg and buyers were said to be active. Factory agents continued to be active at similar prices to what they were paying before Christmas.

Hoggets from 46kg to 48kg were a solid trade and sold mainly from €95 to over €102/head in some cases. There was a strong entry of store lambs on offer also and farmer buyers were actively buying.

Prices of store lambs, again seemed to be fairly stagnant on where they were before Christmas. Light store lambs around 30kg sold mainly from €58 to €64/head, while those from 35kg to 40kg sold mainly from €71 to €77/head. Lambs from 40kg to 45kg sold mainly from €85 to €90/head.

Farmers were also active for cull ewes, with some additional farmers moving to sourcing cull ewes to feed on to slaughter as an alternative to store lambs, given that store lamb prices have been strong all year.

The majority of feeding ewes made from €50 to €75, with fleshed ewes making up to €116/head.

Monday’s sale saw an entry of 94 cull cows on offer. Pat said that they were met with a very strong trade and prices were up as a result.

Fleshed continental cows performed the best, with plainer and light feeding cows a steady trade. The strong cow trade resulted in a 100% clearance for that section. Factory agents snapped up all good-quality fleshed cows.

The sale of heifers saw a seasonal entry of over 90 on offer also and again a very high clearance rate was achieved. There were 72 bullocks on offer on Monday also and 71 were sold.

Commission rates for sheep are €1.50 to the buyer and €2 to the seller.
