Live exports are maintaining their strong performance in 2017 with the latest Department of Agriculture figures for the week ending 30 April recorded at 9,011 head. Calf exports are falling off as the season comes near an end, but a shipment of 3,005 bulls to Turkey by Purcell Brothers ensured total figures moving remain very positive for at least another week.
Calf exports to the Netherlands in particular have reduced in recent weeks with just 1,310 calves exported in the week ending 30 April 2017. This brings total exports to the Netherlands for the year to date to 37,563, an increase of 13,606 on the same period in 2016. Live calf exports to Spain in contrast are holding better with 2,390 head exported for the same week. There were also 36 weanlings and 94 older cattle exported bringing the total number to 2,520 head. Total exports for the year-to-date to Spain stand at 30,402 head, 8,561 higher than the same period in 2016.
Other significant exports taking place in the last week of April are 665 calves and 171 bulls to Italy while there were 234 calves exported to France.
Live exports to Northern Ireland remain under more pressure than previous years. There were 476 cattle exported over 21 months of age for the week ending 30 April, about half of which were destined for direct slaughter while there were 109 younger cattle and 57 calves. Total exports to the north so far in 2017 are running at 9,538 head, 1,585 below last year’s levels.
In contrast, live exports to Britain are running at 2,289 head compared with just 956 in 2016. This is largely being driven by a recovery in demand for dairy stock with freshly calved, in-calf and maiden heifers moving regularly since the turn of the year.
Table 1 details a summary of live exports so far this year.
