All roads lead to the Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society showgrounds in Carrick-on-Shannon this weekend and next weekend. There are 170 of the best commercial adult cattle in Ireland entered for this weekends show and sale, which takes place on Monday 17 November.
The big highlight is the following week, with over 360 weanling heifers entered. These animals will be showed on Sunday 23 November with the sale taking place on Monday 24 November and with 360 weanlings to sell the sale will run late.
It’s hard to describe the Winter Fair to anyone who hasn’t been. The good vibes and positivity of being surrounded by good cattle and livestock breeders.
This is the pinnacle of the year for many commercial livestock breeders and it’s the harvest for many where all their hard work of breeding, calving and looking after livestock comes to fruition, with animals changing hands over the next two weeks.
The one big difference with the winter fair and other livestock sales is the amount of young people involved.
The showgrounds will be thronged with young people for the next two weeks, a sign that the future is bright for high end commercial stock in the years ahead.
Inside this week’s focus Nevan McKiernan takes a look at the timetable for the next two weekends at the fair and also interviews some long-standing exhibitors about their past highlights and hopes for this year’s sale.
David Kenny also takes a look at the science of breeding show calves including how to use myostatin genes to their best advantage.
The Irish Farmers Journal will have a stand in Carrick-on-Shannon over both weekends so if you’re around the sale be sure to drop by for a chat with the team.
