Cattle finishers with young bulls are currently looking at losses of up to €500/head, Teagasc beef specialist David Argue told over 200 finishers at Monday night’s Irish Farmers Journal beef markets meeting.

Factories and Meat Industry Ireland came in for severe criticism from farmers for not attending to explain what is happening to prices.

There is a chink of light in the beef trade this week however, with quotes steadying – but finishers are still a long way off breaking even on autumn purchases.

Speaking at the event in Abbeyleix, Co Laois, IFA president Francie Gorman said: “I’d be advising farmers to sell tough and not give factories all the cattle you have. There’s no excuse for the prices we are taking for our beef.”
