Total AI use in the national suckler herd fell by 6% last year, ICBF figures show.

The decline was driven by an equally large reduction in the number of suckler cows submitted for AI over the course of the year.

The analysis shows that some 137,425 suckler cows were bred via AI in 2018.

With a total of 951,397 suckler cows in the country, this indicates that just 14% of suckler cows were bred to AI in 2018.

Despite the drop in usage, the number of beef AI sires used increased by 1% from 2017.

June has been the busiest month for AI on suckler farms in the last two years, with the month accounting for 17% of all suckler serves in 2018.
