1 Dunmore Cave,

Castlecomer Rd, Kilkenny

Dunmore Cave contains almost a quarter of a mile of passages and at its deepest point is 150ft below the surface. The tour of the cave highlights the impressive calcite formations, and the stories of Vikings within it, confirmed by archaeological findings. Dunmore caves open seven days a week with tours starting at 9.30am, except from November to March when the caves are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. 2 Borris House

Borris, Co Carlow

Borris House, is the ancestral home of the MacMurrough Kavanaghs, Kings of Leinster. The tour covers all aspects of the history of the house, from the original 15th century castle, through its many changes right up to the present day. You will find out all about the Stapleton ceiling and the unique Chapel of St Moling situated beside the house. 5 Kilkenny Castle

The Parade

Kilkenny Castle has towered over the River Nore for more than 900 years. Two wings of the castle have been restored to their 19th century splendour and include a library, drawing room and the noted long gallery. The gardens contain extensive woodland paths, a rose garden and lake. From November to February, access to the castle is by guided tour only. During the rest of the year, visits to the castle are via a self-guided tour. Admission is €6 adult, €2.50 students/children, family €14. Call 056-770-4100.

4 Castlecomer Discovery Park

Set in the former grounds of the Wandesforde Estate, Castlecomer Discovery Park comprises 80 acres of natural woodland and lakes. Attractions include a tree-top adventure walk, a leap of faith experience and a climbing wall. Entry is free with a charge of €2 for car parking. 3 Carlow and Kilkenny Farmers’ Markets

Carlow Farmers’ Market is held each Saturday from 9am to 2pm at the Potato Market and Liberty Tree in the centre of Carlow town. Produce available at the market includes organic and conventional meat and vegetables, chocolates, cheeses, olives, fish, fruit, juices, preserves, crepes, beverages, ready-prepared meals, desserts, cottage garden plants and flowers.

Kilkenny Farmers’ Market takes place every Thursday from 9.30am-2.30pm at The Mayor’s Walk, Parade Plaza, Kilkenny City.

6 Jerpoint Abbey,

Thomastown, Kilkenny

The King of Ossory founded Jerpoint Abbey in 1158 and today the site offers a unique glimpse into the life of the Cistercian monks who once lived there. Visitors can discover the Romanesque church and see tombs from the 13th to 16th centuries, among them the final resting place of the abbey’s first abbot, Felix O’Dulany. Another highlight is the sculpted cloister arcade, which has pillars decorated with rich carvings. Guided tours are also available. Admission for adults costs €2.90, students €1.30, families €7.40.
