The European Union has granted the UK a Brexit extension until 31 January 2020.

The extension was announced by European Council president Donald Tusk on Monday afternoon.

British Prime Minster Boris Johnson, writing to the EU, described the extension as an “unwanted prolongation of the UK’s membership of the EU”, and said he would have much preferred to have ratified the deal agreed between himself and the EU in recent weeks.
