Participation and spending in GLAS are to increase sharply next year, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe said. Spending on the scheme will increase by €69m to €211m in 2017, he said.

The number of participants will rise to 50,000. In 2016 there are 38,000 farmers in the scheme and spending this year will be €142m. This is a further assurance for farmers that the scheme will open over coming weeks to further participants.
