A series of virtual open days are being run by CAFRE to give prospective students and their families an opportunity to find out about the courses that the college offers.

The online events are aimed at students who are interested in studying at CAFRE from September 2021.

“We offer a wide range of further and higher education courses. These are based at our campuses at Greenmount in Antrim, Loughry in Cookstown and at Enniskillen,” said Deirdre Cooper, CAFRE’s student recruitment manager.

“The Further Education (FE) courses on offer at Levels 2 and 3 are for students post GCSE (or equivalent) who are interested in a career in agriculture, food, horticulture, equine, land-based engineering, floristry and veterinary nursing,” she added.

CAFRE also delivers higher education courses, including honours degrees and foundation degree programmes for post A-Level students (or equivalent) in agriculture, food, horticulture and equine.

The virtual open days include information about apprenticeship programmes, ranging from Level 2 to higher level apprenticeships, which are equivalent to foundation degree.

CAFRE's Greenmount Campus is located near Antrim.

“During our virtual open day events we will take you on a tour around our fabulous campuses and show you the state-of-the-art practical facilities CAFRE has to offer at our three locations,” Deirdre said.

“Lecturers will also be online to tell you more about the courses available and there will be information about our industry connections, placements and bursary opportunities,” she added.

The series of virtual open day events will be held on the “discoverCAFRE” Facebook page and will begin at 7pm sharp on the following dates:

  • Tuesday 3 November – horticulture.
  • Thursday 5 November – agriculture.
  • Tuesday 10 November – veterinary nursing.
  • Wednesday 11 November – land-based engineering.
  • Tuesday 17 November – floristry.
  • Two online events were already held earlier this month which focused on food and equine courses at CAFRE.

“If you are thinking about applying to CAFRE or require additional information, please contact us by emailing enquiries@cafre.ac.uk or phoning 0800-028 4291,” Deirdre said.

    Food industry training goes online

A range of training courses at CAFRE which are aimed at the food industry have been moved online due to the coronavirus pandemic. The first of the courses begin on Monday 2 November and most of the programmes are accredited by Highfield Qualifications and Royal Society for Public Health. The courses offered this year include:

  • Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Manufacturing.
  • Level 2 Award in Understanding HACCP.
  • Level 2 Award in Identifying and Controlling Food Allergy Risks.
  • Level 3 Award in Food Safety for Manufacturing.
  • Level 3 Award in Understanding how to Develop a HACCP plan.
  • Level 3 Award in Understanding how to Develop a HACCP plan for the meat industry
  • Level 3 Award in Effective Auditing and Inspection
  • All course materials have been moved to a platform called CAFRE Online. Learners can complete the units at home or in the workplace. Each course will have a specific release date and examination date.

Applications are completed online. Course participants can then access the course online over a specified time period and will have the flexibility to learn at their own pace.

Tutor support will be offered by CAFRE staff. To gain the accredited qualification, candidates are required to attend Loughry Campus to sit their examination under COVID-19 guidelines.
