Sale toppers

  • Declan Phelan’s filly foal by Cornet Obolensky (dam by Sheyenne de Baugy) €36,000.
  • Matthew McBreen’s colt foal by Aganix du Seigneur Z (dam by Ard VDL Douglas) €31,000.
  • Heather Dean-Wright’s filly foal by Diamant de Semilly (dam by Argentinus) €30,000.
  • Last Thursday night was one to remember at Cavan, when the tenth anniversary of the Elite Foal Sale delivered its best set of returns to date.

The outstanding success of the sale was in line with the content of the catalogue which, since its inception has improved year-on-year.

    Fantastic catalogue

During a lively, fast-moving evening, four foals realised in excess of €20,000, among which was a top return of €36,000. Such was the quality on offer, 93% of foals changed hands, resulting in an average of €15,474 (€11,385 in 2021).

“We knew we had a fantastic catalogue, but we never expected the sale to be quite so good.” Said a delighted Stuart Clarke.

“We had great pedigrees and models to match and it’s brilliant to see that Irish breeders have made such massive steps forward.”

    Breeding enthusiast

Reaping the top reward at €36,000 was Declan Phelan’s unnamed filly by the very commercial Cornet Obolensky out of the international jumping mare Biscaya d’Eversem (by Sheyenne De Baugy).

Having competed to 1.60m level under Joan Greene, she has already bred Full Speed D’Eversen (1.35m) while the second dam also campaigned to 1.60m.

Co Kilkenny based Phelan had bought the dam for his wife Ciara, and it is she that is the breeding enthusiast. The filly was carried in a recipient mare, who is now carrying another embryo out of the dam by Diamant de Semilly.

Watching the sale from Australia and bidding through DJ O’Sullivan was successful buyer Tony O’Doherty, who plans to store this one to eventually produce.

    Exceptional blacktype

The final lot to make the €30,000 mark was Heather Dean Wright’s filly Ard Gazelle by Diamant de Semilly out of Arabella (Argentinus).

This filly carried an exceptional blacktype pedigree and, being closely related to Nick Skelton’s world cup horse Showtime (1.60m), was knocked down to an English cash customer for €30,000.

The American based duo of Darragh Kerins and Jordan Coyle were active buyers, and accounted for two lots including Anna Bobel’s Countdown RF a colt by Chacoon Blue out of Brillante (Casco).

A sibling to the French ridden Z Ice Cube Z (1.60m), and to Chellasco (1.45m) he looked well bought at €26,000.
