The Health and Safety Executive in Northern Ireland (HSENI) confirmed to the Irish Farmers Journal that the death had occurred. The victim was named as Alistair Sloss.

The man was understood to have been working with slurry but no further details can yet be released. The death took place at approximately 6pm on Friday 14 October.

Speaking to the Irish Farmers Journal, Keith Buchanan, a Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Mid Ulster said the community is still coming to terms with the death.

Buchanan said the death came as a “massive shock” to the people in the area. “Every farmer knows one another so when one dies, it’s a huge, huge shock,” he said.

On Friday morning, the Irish Farmers Journal reported that five cattle died and a man was hospitalised after as a result of toxic fumes at the agitation of slurry.

Farmers in Northern Ireland cannot spread slurry as and from 16 October.

This death brings to seven the number of farmers who died on farms in Northern Ireland.
