Tuesday’s sale at Enniscorthy Mart saw an increase of about 110 head in the number on offer.

Mart manager Tommy Harrington said that, with the Ploughing coming up, he expects next week’s sale to be quite large also.

In terms of the trade, he added that all better-quality store cattle were a strong trade, with plenty of buyers present.

Plainer cattle from the dairy herd, especially Friesians, are a little slower to sell, but they are selling all the same.

With a good share of dairy-derived stock on offer, average prices are usually a little lower as a result.

Bullocks over 600kg sold from €1.95/kg to €2.12/kg for good-quality types, while feeding bullocks from 500kg to 600kg sold mainly from €1.85/kg to €2.00/kg, with continentals making from €2.00/kg to €2.20/kg. Light stores from 400kg to 500kg sold from €1.90/kg to €2.20/kg.

Heifers over 500kg sold mainly from €1.90/kg to €2.00/kg, with better-quality types making around €2.05/kg. Lighter store heifers were a good trade, with plenty of buyers present. Again, better-quality heifers were the easiest to sell and prices of these ranged mainly from €1.95/kg to €2.00/kg, with better types selling for over €2.20/kg.
