Country music summer festivals have mushroomed around the country in the last few years. Such ventures have long been a staple diet of country followers in America where families and communities rally behind their local festivals, celebrating in style.

Summerfest Carlow made its debut last year and brought plenty of excitement to Carlow town. The Summerfest returns by popular demand in two months’ time and will be staged at the big indoor marquee at Oak Park on the June bank holiday weekend. The shows run from 6pm to midnight on both nights.

Derek Ryan and Cliona Hagan are the headline acts on Saturday 1 June, while Nathan Carter and Robert Mizzell top the bill for the Sunday show.

“I am thrilled to be performing in my hometown and that is such a special honour,” says Derek Ryan. “We had a brilliant weekend last year and the response was so good that it is bound to have a knock-on impact for this June.”

Cliona Hagan’s recognition factor has soared in the meantime due to her participation in the popular Dancing with the Stars series on RTÉ where she made it all to the way to the grand final.

Doing a show in Carlow was a new venture for Nathan Carter last June. “I loved the atmosphere around the place. It was superb and it was one big party. I’m really looking forward to going back to Carlow town this June,” says Nathan.

The promoters of the festival, brothers Ollie and Walter Hennessy in conjunction with Carlow Rugby Football Club, are hoping to develop and expand Summerfest Carlow into one of the major events of the Irish summer circuit in the coming years.

“This part of the country had lagged behind others in relation to festivals of this nature,” says Ollie who is hugely respected across all genres of music in the midlands.

“The people of Carlow and the local business community were thrilled with the success of our inaugural weekend in 2018 which brought such a buzz to the town. People came from all over and all accommodation outlets were booked out for miles around.”

“Along with Derek Ryan, Nathan Carter, Cliona Hagan and Robert Mizzell (pictured), we also have Crystal Swing, Dominic and Barry Kirwan and Ben Troy on the bill. Free parking is provided on site. It will be a great weekend in Carlow.”
