Some 168 farmers applied for compensation under the weather-related crop loss support measure, which was announced last August.

To date, 88 applicants have been paid a total of €393,619, according to the Department of Agriculture.

This amounts to an average of €4,472 per recipient, with Cork accounting for the highest number of paid applicants, followed by Galway and then Donegal.

Some 58 applications were rejected, with one withdrawal and 18 appeals under way, two of which have advanced to the Agriculture Appeals Office.

The Department stated that the main reason for rejected applications was due to farmers not meeting the minimum 30% crop loss rate.

The Department also stated that it was waiting for additional information to come back for 23 cases before any form of payment could be issued.
