The Irish Angus Munster branch hosted its second spring sale in Kilmallock on Saturday, with both top prices coming from the Killernan herd of Martin Hehir, Miltown Malbay, Co Clare.

The top price was €3,200, with the first bull, Killernan Simply Good, hitting the mark.

This November 2019-born son of HW Farghal is out of a Nightingale Paso-bred dam, with Bor Nugget also in the back breeding.

Simply Good boasted five stars on the terminal index, with a beef cow calving figure of 2.7%.

Second seller

Hehir's second high-seller was Killernan Sand Boy.

This November 2019-born bull was again sired by HW Farghal, this time out of a Bunlahy John G cow that goes back to Coneyisland Legend.

Carrying four stars on both the terminal and replacement indices, he was knocked down to a buyer for pedigree breeding.

Securing the second-top price of the sale was Barrinclay Tadgh from Brendan Cronin, Mallow, Co Cork.

Overall, trade was trickier than had been expected pre-sale

This 13-month-old son of stock bull Clonmeen Pride is out of a homebred dam by Mercury Joker. With five stars on the replacement index, he was knocked down at €2,700.

Next in line was Limerick breeder Patrick Kelly who sold his bull, Conicard Sir Shantanu, at €2,600.

This one was a son of Intelagri Matteo ET, with the homebred dam's breeding containing Bohey Jasper and Barrinclay Alastair.

This September 2019-born bull carried a beef cow calving figure of just 1.5%.

Clearance

Overall, trade was trickier than had been expected pre-sale given the super trade witnessed in Kilkenny and Cashel earlier in the week.

That said, of the 24 bulls present, 80% found a new home to average €2,300.

Numbers present were depleted, with one third of those catalogued sold on farm pre-sale.
