The Revenue has ordered Jeremiah O’Connor of Kilavoy, Banteer, Co Cork, to pay €359,488 for under-declaration of VAT.

O’Connor’s name appears on the most recent list of tax defaulters published by the Revenue and he is listed as a coal and tyre retailer and farmer.

It is the highest amount any farmer has to pay, according to this quarter’s list.

Michael Vereker of Gorteen, Slieverue, Co Kilkenny, who is also listed as a farmer, was ordered to pay the second highest amount of €239,978 to the Revenue for under-declaration of income tax.

Agricultural contractor Cormick Bourke of Carrowmore Lacken, Ballina, Co Mayo, was told to pay €51,351 for under-declaration of income tax and VAT.

Farmer and veterinarian, John Moore of Ardvarragh, Clyduff, Rhode, Co Offaly, was ordered to pay €50,080 for under-declaration of income tax.

Income tax returns

Some eight farmers were fined for failing to lodge income tax returns, with fines ranging from €1,250 to €10,000.

The highest fine of €10,000 issued was to farmer, Robert Bradshaw of Rathduff, Cullen, Co Tipperary, who faced two charges of failing to lodge tax returns.

Three farmers were also fined for “misuse of marked mineral oil”, relating to using agricultural diesel in domestic road vehicles.

Fines ranged from €2,500 to €3,500, with the highest fine charged to farmer Richard Gahan of Ballinaboy, Kilmacow, Co Kilkenny.
