'Wrap it Pink' was launched by the Irish Cancer Society in association with Dairygold Co-Op, with donations made to breast cancer research for every bale of wrap purchased.

The idea originated in New Zealand but has now spread to Ireland and the UK.

Margaret Hoctor of Kilmullen Farm, Co Wicklow, is one farmer taking part in the initiative.

"Even if it triggered one woman to go to the doctor for a check, I'd be happy. I think it'll get a conversation going," she said.

"It is quite fun, but there is a serious message behind the pink bales. I had a scare myself and though it proved to be nothing, it still gave me an awful fright. Early detection is key."

Margaret said she has received a great response from the public so far.

"Farmers from all over the world have been in touch with me through Twitter," she said. "It's really taken off...farmers are thinking outside the bale!

"It's something I'd really encourage farmers to take part in, even if it's just a few bales."

Dairygold told the Irish Farmers Journal that the pink wrap has been hugely popular with its customers and sold very quickly. Due to this demand, it is sold out in some co-op stores and online. Contact your local branch for availability.
