Last year, a total of 93 farms incorporating 3,786 acres were offered for sale in Limerick – notably down from the 5,068 acres in 2014.
Price, on the other hand, increased by 5.1% to average €8,665/acre – up from the 2014 average of €8,243/acre. Prices ranged from €4,900/acre for average-quality land to a top of almost €14,900/acre for a small piece of grazing ground.
Just nine farms sold under the hammer. Among these was a 47-acre farm situated near Bilboa which sold for €9,200/acre; a 64.5-acre residential holding located at Doorlas made €10,400/acre; a 35.5-acre residential package at Pallas, Kilmeedy, averaged €9,800/acre; a 47.2-acre farm at Donoman, Croom, made €11,300/acre, while a 14.5-acre parcel near Rathkeale was knocked down at €11,300/acre. Two of the bigger farms that sold at auction included a former dairy and beef farm extending to a 167-acre residential operation located at Ballinguile, Croagh, which was sold for €1.37m or €8,200/acre, and a 78-acre roadside farm at Ballingaddy North, Kilmallock, which made €860,000 or €11,000/acre.
Similar to many other counties, Limerick experienced a softening in the market towards the back end of 2015. Apart from farmers, a number of equestrian-based parties also showed active interest in farmland throughout the year.
Other prices included €9,400/acre for 70 acres of limestone land; €10,300/acre for a sizeable farm close to Limerick city; €9,000/acre for a 45-acre residential holding and €12,857/acre for a prime quality 80-acre residential property with a range of buildings attached.
