Glanmire Macra members recently took part in its most longstanding charity event – winter woodcutting. The event has taken place on an annual basis for almost 30 years, with the club paying visits to a constantly growing and changing list of between 40 and 50 local residents.

A different club member hosts the event each year, and this year it took place on the O’Callaghan farm in Scatbarry, Watergrasshill. Members of the club were on site for most of the day, with chainsaws and axes, cutting and bagging blocks for delivery.

After a huge lunch laid on by Mrs O’Callaghan, the club loaded up and took to the roads to deliver.

Despite the teeming rain, the club met plenty of Glanmire residents who were delighted to receive the firewood and touch base with the club members. Many residents have come to expect an annual visit from the club and members find it rewarding to be able to help out and give something back to the people who made Glanmire what it is today.

Club chair Dónal O’Callaghan said that the annual event is an important opportunity for club members to reconnect with the older residents of Glanmire, and urged people to contact the club if they know of anyone who might be deserving of winter firewood in the future.
