Members of the all-female silage crew the Grass Gals and all-female mechanic team the Socket Rockettes raised over €14,000 for Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.

Back in August the two crews attempted two separate world records at Mount Melleray Abbey, Co Waterford.

The Socket Rockettes set a new world record by rebuilding a disassembled Ferguson T20 in eight minutes 45 seconds without the use of hydraulic tools.

Unfortunately the world record attempt by the Grass Gals, which featured 42 women cutting silage, was not recognised by the Guinness Book of Records because their attempt was based solely on gender.

The 42 women, some of whom travelled from the UK, mowed, raked and drew 30ac of silage in four and a half hours.

A spokesperson for the group said it was disappointing as the women put in eight months of planning in to the attempt.

However the group was delighted with the money raised and wished to thank everybody who supported them.

The presentation, which took place in Lismore Golf Club on Saturday night, also featured the launch of a DVD and calendar based on the event.

Present on the night were chief organiser John O’Brien, Mayor of Waterford Pat Nugent, Mary Butler TD, Mattie McGrath TD , Paul Hallahan IVETA , Catherine Bartels representing the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and manager of the Socket Rockettes, Jerry O’Sullivan.

The DVD is on sale for €20 and calendars for €10 with proceeds from these also going to the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.
