Met Éireann has issued a series of snow and ice warnings ahead of what is set to be a cold weekend.

The first warning comes into place at 12pm on Friday for the north and northwest.

Counties Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo have been told to expect falls of hail, sleet and snow.

The UK Met Office has also issued a similar warning for Northern Ireland, which comes into effect from 4pm on Friday.

It has warned that snow and ice may cause travel disruption on Friday night and into Saturday morning.

Met Éireann’s status yellow snow and ice warning will be extended to the entire country from 6pm on Saturday.

The warning of falls of hail, sleet and snow leading to icy and hazardous conditions will last until 12pm on Sunday.
