IFA debt support

Farm business chair Martin Stapleton has encouraged farmers experiencing difficulty in meeting loan repayments to engage early with their banks or to contact the IFA for support. He said that the IFA can provide assistance to farmers in their engagement with financial institutions, if necessary, and constructive outcomes involving restructuring can often be reached. The IFA Debt Support Service can be contacted in confidence on 1890 924 853.

Timber prices

The latest IFA Timber Price report shows that palletwood prices have increased by up to 15% since February, while average sawlog prices are in excess of €85/t. Forestry chair Pat Collins has said with demand for timber predicted to remain high at a domestic and global level, it is a good time to consider forestry. There are several options available under the Afforestation & Woodland Creation Scheme to suit the soil, size, location and management objectives.

Slurry deadline

The deadline for derogation farmers to spread slurry has been extended to 15 July. Environment chair Thomas Cooney said the extension provides for the fact that it would not be possible for many farmers to meet the original deadline and it must be taken into consideration that many farmers, since learning earlier this year of the new low-emission spreading technology requirement, have placed orders with manufacturers but are struggling to get the required equipment.
