The Midland and Western Livestock Improvement Society hosted the second of the May sales this weekend, with the Angus breed making up most of the lots present.

Strong pedigree and commercial demand meant a few super prices were achieved, along with an excellent clearance rate.

In total, 35 of the 39 Angus bulls on offer sold to average just shy of €2,450.

Leading the way

Leading the prices with a top call of €6,000 was the very first bull into the ring, Bunlahy Sean Dubh ET.

Bred by brothers Aidan and David Reynolds from Ballinalee, Co Longford, the powerful October bull is out of the herd’s famous Bianca line.

The sire of the high-seller is former overall all-Ireland champion Carrigroe Mr Rebel.

Carrying five stars on the terminal index and with a beef cow calving figure of only 1.9%, Sean Dubh was secured by Meath breeder Michael Bird of the Dunlever herd.

Dungimmon Tom which sold for €4,300, exhibited by William and Andrew Woods.

Taking the second-top price was Dungimmon Tom from the Woods family outside Ballyconnell, Co Cavan.

Another one early into the ring, this January 2020-born bull is sired by NCBC bull HW Farghal.

Tom’s dam is a homebred daughter of three-time all-Ireland champion Rosemead Karona.

Carrying five stars on the terminal index and four on the replacement, this one heads to a suckler farmer in Co Meath.

Cannonpark Bell West W427, which sold for €3,700.

Shortly after, Cannonpark Bell West W427 hit the market at €3,700.

This January 2020-born bull was bred by local Dromod breeder Michael Shanley and sired by Bova AI bull Bova Lord Bonanza.

Ranking five stars on both the terminal and replacement indices, Bell West offered an outcross pedigree, with the dam's breeding including TC Freedom 104 and Fullam Mr Zeus Z104.

HW Farghal progeny were back in the money when Cloonmurray Tyson sold for €3,500.

This stylish young bull was born in March 2020 and was brought out by Strokestown breeder Michael Doorley.

Out of Brideswell Lance, a daughter of all-Ireland champion Ballyshannon Eric, Tyson ranked five stars on the terminal index, with a beef cow calving figure of 3.3%.

Hitting a price of €3,300 was Driney Trump Card.

This very well-grown yearling son of Westellen Diego is out of a Nakkeg Nord-bred cow, with Bagatelle in the back breeding.

Bred by Gerard Regan, he ranked five stars on the replacement index.

End of an era

It was the end of an era as Ballyshannon Tommy from James Marrow hit the market at €3,200.

This will likely be the last bull sold from the famous Donegal herd, which has been synonymous with breeding quality lots.

The March 2020-born Tommy was no exception and was a son of Netherton Mr Brazilian and out of a Ranui Impact-bred dam.

He was secured by Castlerea-based Sean Regan for breeding.

Also hitting the €3,200 mark was Drumbeera Lord Humble W262 from local breeders Thomas and Patrick Beirne.

This well-made 12-month-old bull is sired by the herd’s stock bull Caulry Nationwide, with Ankonian Elixir and Jerusalem Faraday also in the lineage.

With five stars on the terminal index and four on the replacement, he heads to Co Mayo.
