Taking top honours at this year’s Clonmel Show was the Belgian Blue breed with Boherard Hanky Panky.

This six-year-old cow, shown alongside her October-born heifer calf, claimed the Belgian Blue championship before going all the way and taking the overall interbreed championship, which carried a prize fund of €500.

Bred and exhibited by David Pearson, Ballacolla, Co Laois, Hanky Panky is no stranger to success having claimed the champion of champions award in 2015. Hanky Panky is sired by Kilowatt and out of the homebred dam Boherard Dazzler.

Standing reserve to Pearson’s Blue cow was the Charolais champion Grangewood Nora from Jerry O’Keeffe, Knocklong, Co Limerick.

This November 2017-born heifer is a daughter of Crossmolina Jupiter and was first at the Cork and Charleville shows.

Finally, taking the second reserve was the Simmental breed champion from Garrett Behan, Ballyfin, Co Laois. His senior cow Clonagh Dora The Explorer, shown alongside her May-born bull calf, made quite the impression.

Sired by Banwy T-Rex, Dora is no stranger to the show ring either, having claimed the overall national Simmental title in 2015 and 2016.

Junior

In the junior interbreed championship, open to both males and females, it was the Charolais breed that emerged victorious.

Continuing her success from Cork Show, Goldstar Osanna went on to claim her second junior interbreed title.

Bred and exhibited by the Ryan family, the class was open to first- and second-prizewinners born after 1 September 2018 from all breeds.

Taking the reserve spot was the January-born Limousin calf Cillcon Penelope from John Moloney.

This Sympa-sired heifer is out of a Vantastic dam and has already collected six red rosettes this year.

Young handlers

One of the largest classes of the day was the young handler class for boys and girls under 16 years of age.

Along with collecting prizemoney of €200, the winner also collected the Sophie Pearson perpetual memorial trophy.
