Tag suppliers across NI are reporting sharp increases in orders of tissue tags ahead of the introduction of the compulsory phase of the bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) eradication scheme on 1 March.

On enquiry, suppliers quoted prices for tissue tags for BVD testing in the range of £4.90 to £5.10 plus VAT. This appears to be slightly cheaper than what farmers paid during the voluntary phase of the scheme. Prices of around £5.15 plus VAT were common this time last year.

It is also noteworthy that deals can be done with some suppliers for bigger herds or farmers forward-buying a larger number to cover more than one calving season.

Deals are also common with most suppliers for a free pair of taggers with the first order of tissue tags.

However, this can depend on the number of tags being purchased and also some suppliers are only offering free taggers until 1 March. Depending on the make of tag, taggers can range in price from £10 to £18 plus VAT.

The three main makes of tags available are Caisley, Allflex and Typifix. Caisley and Allflex taggers can be used on both tissue and standard tags.

Pre-addressed envelopes for sending the tissue samples for testing are included in many packs.

Even though demand has escalated, most suppliers maintain that tags will be ready for collection within two to three days of placing an order. However, some said that waiting times could increase as we move closer to the scheme beginning on 1 March.
