Creating a mural is a fun way to add personality to your home and a great use of leftover paint! I will explain two options here, depending on your level of confidence. But if you want to practice first, consider painting an outdoor wall, like a shed or farm outhouse, before you try it indoors.

Option 1

Freehand mural

I created this mural in my hallway using leftover paint. Here is a top tip: don’t leave leftover paint in the attic or shed, as the change of temperature will interfere with the quality. I actually keep my paints under the bed – that’s how obsessed I am with DIY!

The wall in the hallway had been annoying me for some time, so I searched for inspiration on Instagram and found a similar design to this one in a shop in France. I drew my mural freehand, but you can always sketch it on a piece of paper to practice if you are not sure.

After clearing the wall of the mirror, accessories etc, I began to draw the outline of the mural in pencil. I did this bit by bit. I drew the first leaf and stepped back to make sure I was happy with it, drew the next leaf, stepped back etc. Otherwise, it would have been too overwhelming. I then filled in the pencil design using my leftover paints.

Option 2

Decal stencil/sticker

If that sounds a little daunting, but you still like the idea of a mural, why not consider a decal stencil?

Using a decal sticker is a great way to add personality to any room. \ Wioleta Kelly

For example, I got this sticker for the twins’ nursery from Urban Walls at www.uwdecals.com . You can also buy them on other sites, but my tip is to pay a little extra, as cheaper decal stickers can stick to the plaster of the wall and are nightmare to remove. You pay for the quality, and you can always peel it off and stick it somewhere else if you fancy a change.
