French-born Judee is owned by Laurits Gellert, a Danish Charolais breeder.

Laurits spent 39 years as manager of the shoe brand Ecco, before buying his own small farm in 2017.

Since 1990, Laurits has visited France to research and study the Charolais breed. He is a regular at the Charolais show in Vichy – a must for any Charolais enthusiast.

Laurits visited the herd of Jean Christian Raymond in 2014 and though the two didn’t speak or understand each other’s language they communicated quite well.

Laurits just couldn’t keep his eyes off an eight-month-old heifer calf, Judee, which was certainly not for sale.

Laurits returned the next day and through his persistence managed to buy the heifer for the sum of DDK100,000, equivalent to €13,400.

Four years later, Judee was crowned Danish cow champion and grand champion for 2018. As national champion Judee was entered into the world champion competition where she outdid the other European competitors to book her place at the Canadian finale. At the Farmfair International Show, Judee was crowned champion of the world.

As manager at Ecco, Laurits imported many animals from France to the Ecco herd for leather. He also used a lot of French semen on the heifers there – something he continues to do today with his own small Charolais-G herd.

In his own breeding, Laurits aims for muscularity, strong feet and legs, and a triangular head. He prioritises milk production and would like to see breeders and countries putting more emphasis on that trait.

Judee’s 2019 bull calf, Paw-g, by French bull Himalaya, is following in his dam’s footsteps, recently claiming the calf champion title a regional show.

On Paw-g’s first birthday he mounted the scales, coming in at an impressive weight of 752kg.

In April 2020 Judee is due to deliver another calf by Himalaya.

French breeders don’t dehorn their animals so Laurits doesn’t either. He also has no plans to use semen from polled bulls.
