The Irish Aberdeen-Angus Association was proud to announce the launch of a new genomics scheme for its members. With markets demanding traceability/certification, this venture is seen as a vital move in protecting their markets. It will also give reassurance to the breeders when buying or selling Aberdeen-Angus cattle, as an element of the genomics includes DNA. Genetic evaluations will help breeders to make informed decisions when selecting animals for breeding. Representatives from the Irish Aberdeen-Angus Association and The Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society, Scotland, met representatives from ICBF where a roadmap for this ambitious project was agreed.

Speaking at the launch of the new genomics scheme, association president Mack Crowe said: “The Aberdeen-Angus brand is renowned worldwide. It would be folly if we were to let this opportunity lapse as it underpins the authenticity of the brand and gives reassurance to breeders.”

In supporting the scheme, the Irish Aberdeen-Angus Association will be funding, from its own resources, the cost of genomic testing of all bull calves born in 2018. In future, all first-calving heifers joining the herd are also to be genomically tested. Breeders will shortly receive hair sample cards along with instructions in the post.
