On Friday 10 and Saturday 11 October, the 25th anniversary of the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society Youth Development Programme (YDP) finals took place on the farm of the famous Deveron Herd of Hamish and Margaret Sclater, Turriff, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Finalists arrived from all over Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland on Friday to the Crowne Plaza in Aberdeen, where they were treated to a welcome buffet and a team building and introductory games by the 2025 World Angus forum team.
This was followed by a presentation from the team on the World Angus forum, which took place in May in Australia.
Finals
On Saturday morning, the finalists and their parents traveled to the Sclater family farm, who really outdid themselves with over 40 spring-born calves trained to an excellent standard, as well as providing superb facilities, where all 32 finalists competed in various sections, including clipping, grooming, ring craft, stock judging, panel interviews and presentations.
A panel of experienced judges from all over the UK oversaw the various sections.
Later that evening, the presentation ceremony took place in the hotel, hosted by Ireland co-ordinator Niall Lynch, society president Alan Morrison and YDP chair Ewen Campbell.
Joining them on the night were John and Marion Tilson of the Wedderlie Herd to present the prizes, as they were one of the founding members of the YDP 25 years ago.
To the delight of those who traveled over from Ireland, the senior, intermediate and junior categories were all won by Irish participants.
Winning the senior section was James Morrison from Co Fermanagh, Cliodhna Smith from Co Meath took home first place in the intermediates and Adam Kearney from Co Clare triumphed in the juniors.
