What a fantastic few weeks we have had. It’s been stormy, wet and cold but who could argue with the action at Leopardstown over Christmas. We all watched as a host of superstars of the track won and lost, appeals were lodged and new stars emerged.
Hunting fans have also had plenty of good days out with many more to come as the wild weather looks like it may settle. At the moment, however, the weather is still wreaking havoc and as the major electricity outages are being fixed and the damage assessed, we will start to see the problems some of our horses have faced. Look over the fence and make sure all is normal and if you come across an animal that needs help, call the Department helpline on 1850-211-990.
As we were going to press this week, a very informative day was just starting in Killashee in Naas as the Showjumper’s Club hosted its inaugural Equine Hedge School. This seminar is the first of its kind in the country for the sport horse industry. It will cover the industry in general and aims to provide an insight from professionals about making a viable business in today’s challenging climate.
The day is chaired by breeder and producer Dr Noel Cawley, with topics ranging from veterinary and nutritional care to practical issues relating to the legal and licensing requirements for transporting horses.
The part of the day that I am most looking forward to is hearing from world experts like Lt Col Gerry Mullins, Ireland rider Billy Twomey, agent and producer Enda Carroll and the influential show jumper David Broome.
