Some of this is through facilitating family arrangements which have allowed the farms continue and develop. In circumstances where there has not been a family option or where an enthusiastic skilled young farmer is looking to start or develop his/her beef/sheep enterprise we are there.
Jim and Noreen Sexton were looking to step back from a beef enterprise on their 100ac farm in Clare. Jim and Noreen engaged with the Land Mobility Service to go through their options and see could we help find a suitable collaborator. Though our database and the Irish Farmers Journal page we presented them with a number of possibilities. Invited parties viewed the farm and presented proposals. Local man Cathal Nash stood out. Cathal, a suckler farmer selling weanlings, wanted to expand numbers and be able to finish some of the offspring – the Sexton farm was ideal. Facilitated by The land Mobility Service, they agreed a long-term arrangement.
Brian and Damien Flynn, two cousins and young part-time farmers in Westmeath, made contact with The Service at a Macra land mobility workshop in Tullamore. Both had land and a few stock, both liked farming but were struggling to make it work. We investigated the option of forming a partnership, allowing them to make the best use of their land, infrastructure and time. The service facilitated a registered partnership which has allowed them to benefit from young farmer schemes. Working together, they have been able to better manage their time, while developing and excellent sheep flock.
Kenneth Murphy availed of the service to secure extra ground to expand his beef and tillage enterprises in Waterford. The service helped him find ground and facilitate a fair arrangement with the land owner.
Padraig Keyes, a young beef farmer in Offaly, engaged with the service to secure extra land on a long-term basis to provide more certainty. We came across a local farmer who was looking to step back. We put them in contact with each other and subsequently facilitated a collaboration.
