Songs of the People
10 May: Wexford Arts Centre will welcome the Jablokov brothers this May for a performance of Songs of the People. Vladimir and Anton Jablokov, originally from Slovakia, are both concert violinists. Vladimir moved to Ireland in 2004 and has risen from busking on Grafton Street to playing some of the world’s finest concert halls. Recently the pair toured around Ireland and the UK performing a repertoire of Russian songs in tribute to their Russian heritage. Their new show focuses on songs that are widely known. The brothers, accompanied by Adam Kuruc on piano and Peter Vizvari on double bass, will breathe new life into classics such as Danny Boy and Que Sera Sera, among many others. Sherlock Gnomes
11 May: After a string of garden-gnome disappearances in London, Gnomeo and Juliet look to legendary detective Sherlock Gnomes and his trusty sidekick Gnome Watson, to solve the case of their missing friends and family. Left with very few clues, the team must work together to find their missing comrades. An adventure film that keeps the audience hooked, it promises to provide great entertainment for young and old.
Breaking In
11 May: Breaking In is an American thriller directed by James McTeigue and starring Gabrielle Union. The film follows single mother Shaun Russell who, after the sudden death of her father, takes her two children, Glover and Jasmine, to his Malibu mansion in order to settle his estate. But at the mansion are four criminal convicts intent on finding the deceased’s safe and making off with its contents. Like all mothers, Shaun will stop at nothing to ensure her children's safety, and also till she gets back what is rightfully hers.
Da
10 May: Da by Hugh Leonard is a very funny, but tender play set in Dublin after the burial of Charlie Tynan’s father. The story revolves around the living memories of Charlie, a grown man who returns home to Ireland after the death of his father only to find the old man’s presence still very much alive. While he sorts through his father’s things, he is visited by Da’s ghost, who stubbornly refuses to leave the house or his son's mind. The play is full of one-liners based on emotional injury, love, and marriage. For more info and ticket prices, visit www.thesourceartscentre.ie.
The Successful TD
12 May: The Successful TD follows the trials, tribulations, misadventures and hilarious antics of Tull McAdoo as he seeks re-election to the Dáil in the October elections. Written by well-known Irish playwright John B Keane, this show displays his edge for humour and satire that are uncomfortably close to the politics of today. McAdoo takes credit for all the local road-building, drainage schemes and anything else in his local area – all in his aspiration to be re-elected. The Successful TD stars Jon Kenny and Mary McEvoy. For further info, visit www.entertainment.ie, the comedy plays at An Táin Arts Centre, Dundalk.
