The results of the 2021 annual tractor of the year (TOTY) awards have recently been announced.

Claiming this prestigious award was Massey Ferguson (MF) with its new 8S series, launched last July.

The tractor to win the award was the flagship 8S.265 Dyna E-Power Exclusive model.

The 8S.265 takes over the reins from last year’s TOTY winner, the Fendt 942.

The four-model 8S series is headed up by the 8S.265, while horsepower across the four models ranges from 205hp to 265hp, each offering an extra 20hp via engine power management (EPM).

New machine

The 8S, according to Massey and based on what we’ve seen so far, is a completely new machine, with new novel, innovative designs within the cab, controls and connectivity.

The exterior has seen huge differences in terms of styling, transmission and driveline options.

MF vice-president and managing director Europe and the Middle East Thierry Lhotte said: “This prestigious award recognises how Massey Ferguson is defining a new era in straightforward and dependable tractor design.”

A unique feature of the all new 8S tractors is what MF call the Protect-U design, a 24cm space between the cab and engine which insulates the cab from noise, heat and vibration coming from the engine.

Not only does the 8S include new cab displays and controls, but also much more connectivity than before, with the MF Connect telemetry and Datatronic 5 terminal fitted as standard, with options to expand and build on this.

The new Dyna E-Power dual clutch transmission offers the comfort of a CVT with the efficiency of a semi-powershift, according to the firm.

This transmission is claimed to reduce power losses by up to 26%. Depending on fuel prices, this can equate to as much as a 5% fuel saving.

Alternatively, the new Dyna-7 semi-powershift is also available. It offers a total of 28 forward and reverse speeds, while keeping the same easy operation of the proven Dyna-6.

Essentially, the Dyna-7 adds one extra gear and smoother shifting while being more efficient.

Although Exclusive specification units have been entering the country slowly, Efficient models are expected to follow in early 2021, along with the option of a Dyna-VT CVT transmission.

Awards panel

The TOTY jury is made up of 26 agricultural machinery journalists from 26 EU countries.

Three other awards were up for grabs - best utility, best specialised tractor and sustainable TOTY.

Best utility was awarded to the new Valtra G series; best specialised went to the Fendt 211 V Vario; and the Claas Axion 960 Cemos took home the sustainable TOTY award for 2021.
